1942 Mercury Dime Values. Earlier, it was mentioned that poor condition 1942 Mercury dimes are worth around their weight at silver spot price. While this is certainly true, specimens in better condition are considerably more valuable. This is the case for less worn 1942 Mercury dimes as well as for their uncirculated counterparts. First, if you find the 'D' or 'S' mintmark it immediately raises the value of your 1928 dime. Collectors assembling sets often include all the different mints coining dimes in a given year. A nice example minted in Denver or San Francisco has proven difficult to find.

Next, as you judge the condition of your old silver dimes it is likely you discover a coin worth far above silver value. There are many serious collectors of Mercury dimes and in their search to add nicer additions are willing to pay higher prices.

The San Francisco mint used an 'S' mark and Denver a 'D' to distinguish dimes struck at their facilities. Both mintmarks are found on the reverse along the rim. Dimes without a mark were struck in Philadelphia.

Several subtle effects have combined to dramatically boost the value of this rare 1928 Mercury dime. Catching the attention of serious collectors is the stunning first impression as you view this coin. The slight and pale reddish golden toning mixing with the vibrant silver blue draws your eye.

1928 Dime Value is Conditional

The amount of wear or preferable the lack of it, determines a large part of the value of your 1928 dime. Collectors after checking the date and mintmark next examine the condition of the coin and give it a 'grade. ' As a coin wears there are distinct visual differences from one 'grade' to the next. Judge your coins against the images and descriptions to gain an accurate value.

Uncirculated: At the top in value and desirability, an Uncirculated Mercury dime is in the same condition as it left the mint, there is no wear on the coin. The delicate mint luster is unbroken and still covers the entire surface. Examine high points of the design for signs of wear, it occurs first on the hair above the eye and Liberty's cheek just below the eye.

Extremely Fine: Although this coin has been in circulation, it sill remains very detailed in appearance. Across the surface a small amount of wear is visible. The feather details of the wing above Liberty's ear have worn and lost detail but remain separated. Also a slight flatness to the once rounded cheek is noticeable. On the reverse, all of the vertical lines of the 'fasces' are separated. Your coin is a nice collectible condition with a premium 1928 dime value.

1942 Liberty Dime Value Today

Fine: Wear is noticeable covering the entire surface, diminishing the minor parts of the design. A blending of hair details on the obverse and a flattening of the design in the leaf details on the reverse. At this stage of wear your old coin still retains a pleasing look.

Good: Heavy wear has removed most of the design, leaving only Liberty's portrait in outline. Protection once afforded by the rim is now blending with the lettering. The central device on the reverse 'fasces' is worn smooth, again the rim is worn significantly into the lettering. Most silver dimes in good condition are worth the price of silver.
